President’s Blog: Diphtheria outbreak a good test for new preventative health minister

Over the past fortnight, representation has emerged as a common thread in many of the issues crossing my desk.

Whether it’s ensuring remote communities have a voice in public health responses, advocating for the interests of WA doctors on the national stage, recognising outstanding service, or bringing together public health portfolios under one Minister, representation matters because the best solutions are those informed by the people and communities they affect.

🀝 Who's involved in an insurance claim?

Dealing with an insurance claim can be a bewildering experience, particularly if you've never had to make one before.

Knowing who does what, from your broker acting as your advocate, to the insurer assessing coverage, a loss assessor providing independent evaluation, and the builder carrying out repairs, can make the process far less stressful when the unexpected happens.

Ambulances ramping outside a hospital

Ambulance ramping remains below last year’s record levels

St John recorded 5,924 hours of ambulance ramping in July, an increase from June but more than 1,000 hours lower than the record July 2025 figure of 7,012 hours.

The latest figures show progress compared with last winter, following calls from WA’s health workforce, including the AMA (WA), for action to address the causes of ramping.

Poor sleep is affecting millions of Australians, and for many doctors, long hours and overnight shifts make the challenge even greater. In Sleep First, Dr Jemma King explores the science of sleep and shares practical strategies to improve recovery, focus, and wellbeing.

The book also challenges common assumptions about sleep, explaining why eight hours may not be enough if you're missing out on deep sleep, and why quality is just as important as quantity.
